My Reading Techniques, by Yukio Mishima
"But fortunately, when a reader has the spirit of “reading techniques,” it is the norm for a book to firmly shut its gates and refuse to permit him to worship at its innermost sanctum."
My Reading Techniques
Yukio Mishima
I have for a long time had the habit of underlining1 places that I like in books. I still do so in minute detail even now, and on my night table book and pencil are always placed together. However, I now find the underlines I did a long time ago a little embarrassing. I took interest in truly boring places and was impressed by shallow witticisms. Rereading them later, the tastes of my youth are amusing and readily inferred.
