In Affirmation of the Greater East Asian War, by Hayashi Fusao (Part One)
"I believe that the time has come in which each and every Japanese must perform a reevaluation and a reappraisal with his own eyes of the 'Greater East Asian War.'"
In Affirmation of the Greater East Asian War was initially serialized in Chūō Kōron from September 1963 to June 1965 by proletarian writer turned patriot Hayashi Fusao (1903-1975). As the title indicates, his purpose is to defend Japan’s Greater East Asian War (1937-1945), but by an unusual method: he argues that what is known to all as the Greater East Asian War was merely the final stage in a century-long war of resistance waged against the Western invasion of Asia. The book caused much controversy, but some, including Mishima Yukio, approved of its content.
This is the first part of what, if there is sufficient interest, may become a serialized translation of the entire book. If this project gains sufficient interest, I will also serialize translations of other books from Japanese.
